The artists taking the stage on August 20 in Mont-Carmel!

The Mont-Carmel Summer Concert Series continues every Sunday night of the summer until August 27 at the Mont-Carmel Parish Hall.

The artists who will take the stage of the Mont-Carmel Parish Hall on Sunday, August 20, are New Brunswick Country singer/songwriter Daniel Goguen, the Cuban music group Montuno Cubano, Island Country singer/songwriter Scott MacKay as well as Island fiddling sensation Richard Wood.

Singer/songwriter Daniel Goguen lives in St-Thomas-de-Kent, close to Bouctouche in New Brunswick and currently has 6 recordings to his name.  He has been performing on stage for the last 25 years.  For two consecutive years, his original songs were selected as Song of the Year on the French Country Music Charts of l’ARCANB : in 2014, it was his song “Les Backroads” and, in 2015,  “Finalement la fin de semaine”.  In 2016, Daniel won the Stingray Rising Star Traditional Country award at the Western Festival in St-Tite with his song “Finalement la fin de semaine”.  Furthermore, during the same year, he received nominations for both Album of the Year and Male Singer of the Year during the Country Gala presented at the Casino de Montréal.  His last studio recording “Un air country” was released during the fall of 2021.

Montuno Cubano is a lively band, and their repertoire includes bolero, guaracha, salsa, mambo, rumba, conga, Cubano, punto guajira, suca suca, and cha-cha-cha.  Jorge Peña is the lead vocalist, and he plays requinto, an instrument that looks like a guitar, but is shorter, wider, and tuned higher so it has a very bright sound. Jorge has performed alongside his brother at festivals throughout Cuba as well as in Spain, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Brazil and Canada.  Mark Carr-Rollitt, an ECMA-nominated musician, joins him on percussions.  In Cuban music, the “montuno” is the final section of a song, and it is usually faster, bolder, and semi-improvised. In Spanish, “montuno” means, “comes from the mountain” and it refers to a style of music that originated from Santiago de Cuba which is where Jorge Peña grew up on a coffee plantation. When a song reaches the “montuno” if people are not already dancing, they will want to!

Scott MacKay is a singer/songwriter from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.  His most recent recording, Stupid Cupid, echoes the sounds of Country music from the 50’s and 60’s.  His catalogue of music has surpassed one million streams online. His song Where the Enemy Sleeps from his album Twin was used as the theme song for the true crime podcasts Over My Dead Body, and Joe Exotic: Tiger King.  The latter was the inspiration behind the hit series Tiger King on Netflix. Over the years, he has been nominated for both Music PEI and Calgary Music awards.  His album Stupid Cupid won an ECMA for Country Recording of the Year.  Scott presents a classic Country show which offers a fresh, modern take on classic Country music.

For more than three decades, 5-time ECMA, multi-Music PEI Award-winner, a two-time recipient of the Don Messer Memorial Trophy and winner of countless step-dancing & fiddling championships, Richard Wood has blown away sold-out audiences around the globe with his traditional-born, fiery brand of Celtic music.  His 8th album, Unbroken, which won an ECMA and received a nomination at the Canadian Folk Music Awards had reviewers praising it as some of his best work to date!  During this performance, he will be accompanied by Brent Chaisson and there will be stepdancing by Isabelle Saunders.

The show will start at 7:00 p.m. and the doors of the Mont-Carmel Parish Hall (5786 Route 11, Mont-Carmel) open at 6:15 p.m. During the evening, spectators will be able to buy 50/50 tickets and the canteen will be open. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for members of our Cooperative, $5 for students and free for preschoolers. Given that seating is limited, folks are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance at cdcpmc.eventbrite.com.  If any tickets are left, they will be made available for purchase at the door on the night of the show.  Spectators can also purchase their tickets on site for the last show of our Summer Concert Series as well as tickets for our Grand Ruisseau Song Festival which will take place from Sunday, September 10 to Sunday, October 1.

The mandate of the Coopérative de développement culturel et patrimonial de Mont-Carmel is to showcase, develop and promote the rich cultural heritage of Mont-Carmel.
